Green Exercise

I just read this article about a gym in Seattle that converts human power into electrical power. I remember seeing this exact idea in the “artifacts from the future” section of a Wired magazine several years ago and thinking, “the future? That’s something that could be done right now!”

I would eventually like to build a house that has an exercise room with equipment that is hooked up to the central power supply, thereby creating yet another incentive for Morah and I to exercise – that incentive being a lower electricity bill. It would almost be like getting paid to exercise, which is an idea with which I can definitely get on board!

At any rate, I’m just glad that there are people on both the small scale, and the large scale, who are trying to make this very green, very feasible idea into a reality.

Going Green

My name is Thomas J. Brown, and my wife, Morah, and I are trying to live more Earth-friendly lifestyles. This blog will chronicle our attempts to do so while we grow our family and set down roots in Spokane, WA.

We’ve already taken a number of steps, which I will document later on, but for now, I want to point out that this blog is hosted by a carbon-neutral company.

I also want to point out that our attempts to be greener extend well beyond just our apartment; I’m part of the “green committee” at work, and our friends are probably starting to get sick of hearing about what they could do to live more eco-friendly lives.

Posts will be erratic at best – I have a couple of other blogs that I write, three or four books I’m reading, and an endless stream of web pages that all vie for my attention. My wife isn’t much of a writer, so she won’t be posting much, although she may make the occasional appearance.

I’ll also be reworking the theme and layout a bit (I’m a web designer and developer), so things may be a bit wonky at times.

So that’s my awkward little introduction. We look forward to reading your comments and suggestions.

Oh, we also have a cat named Kisa.
